Eastern Bank Sucks Customer Reviews and Feedback
Eastern Bank is the oldest and largest mutual bank in the United States and the largest community bank in Massachusetts. With 95 branches, Eastern had a 3.2 percent market share in Massachusetts in 2016. It was founded in 1818 in Salem, and then moved to Lynn, Massachusetts. The company began an aggressive expansion campaign near the end of the 1990s and moved its headquarters to Boston's Financial District. In 2020, Eastern Bank announced plans to de-mutualize and become a publicly traded corporation.
An angry customer said this in a review "Absolutely horrible bank. DO NOT USE. They are terrible to work with in terms of personal checking, mortgage loans, and personal loans. We recently tried to get financing and due to the length of the process, poor communication, and terrible customer service we have decided to go elsewhere. Their are plenty of other much better banks to use. STAY AWAY".

Service Associate (Current Employee) says"Big bank mentality. They don't want to admit it, but that is where it is all headed. SELL, SELL, SELL! That is all that matters. Micro management is at an all time high here. Cold calling (big bank), call nights (big bank), and you are told how to "talk" to people without "selling". But yet at the end of the day all they care about are the numbers.(big bank) 360 coaching (big bank). Training is done in Boston or Lynn. The new people being hired are from Big Banks and there is a reason for this. Eastern wants this new mind set for the company. Lately it is a revolving door with new employees. Once they see what the bank is all about they leave. Which leads to always being short staffed. There are a few employees that have been with the bank for quite a few years. They are either just counting down the days to retirement or feel they have too much time invested now to leave. They are not "happy" people. Everyone is so stressed out over sales goals. Just when you are feeling good about an accomplishment, your manager is right there to remind you that it's not quite good enough. You could do better. Health benefits are more expensive than most companies. You can buy an extra week of PTO if your manager "allows" it. It's really too bad that the bank is headed in this direction. I think the higher management is out of touch with lower management and how they are treating the employees. The pay is just not what it should be for all that is expected of you. Cons: always short staffed/ sales/ high stress"
Teller Manager (Former Employee) says"I followed a previous manager from another job to this job. Shortly switching I ending getting a new managers. The new manager I had had some kind of issue as she starting righting me up for everything. While working for this job I became ill and starting loosing tons of weight due to the stress and my illness. No matter what I did this manager was never happy with me. I even came in on my vacation to assist the manager as she did not know how to close and needed assistance even then I got no thank you for coming in on my time to assist her. She wrote me up so much that she wrote me out of the job. When I spoke to human resources I was told that I should have took a leave if I was that sick they did nothing to look into my complaint. Cons: bad management"

Customer Service Supervisor (Current Employee) says"The environment is very disparaging, managers are not very honest. Its all about who you know. Employees are overall not happy. Management is very fake, abusive, no career path. No leadership values. The staff is not treated very nice. No raises for standard workers. No leadership from HR. Managers can do and say what they want. In all the time I have been employed I never experienced an environment like this. A work relationship like this no oversight from Human Resources checking to make sure their managers are abiding by employment laws. Cons: Some managers do not belong in this position."

They need to take care of all employee needs not just what they get attention for as racial diversity. There are others to focus on that doesn't get media attention. Cons: Only focus on diversity not long term employees who deserve recognition."

Operations Associate (Current Employee) says"Management can be great or it can be cruel depends on who you have. I am surprised at who are at management level to be quite honest. My previous manager was amazing! I always felt appreciated and that I was going to grow however my current manager is the complete opposite! If you like being talked down to and treated badly then this is the place for you! A lot of sales pressure as well! Only thing keeping me here is I receive great benefits. Health, 401k, pension, vacation, tuition reimbursement etc Cons: Too much sales pressure, horrible management at times"

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee) says"Wow what can I say about a department that is under staffed and expected to work overtime due to managements errors to not staff appropriately during a system migration. To have to ask permission to leave the department for basic issues or to finish up on an angry customers complaint while you are in not ready. The management does not lead by example they chit chat and discuss lunch while the reps are stressing and trying to help their customers and limit the wait time. You can't ask for time off after you schedule an appointment because it is usually declined. I have learned from others to just call in sick but that is not who I am. I enjoyed my job when I first started but am disappointed now how I am treated when I work so hard and not appreciated."

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) says"I would come into work and sometimes not have anyplace to sit at a desk to wait on customers. Which made it difficult to have the customer time I needed to reach goals due to the fact that I had no place to wait on them. I learned how to give great customer service, I loved waiting on them when I had a chance. The management would often be competitive to get most of the accounts and loan applications and often was not available to get approvals on certain management issues. The hardest part of the job was getting to use a free desk to wait on customers. The most enjoyable part was being able to help a customer that was having any problems with accounts/loans. I got great self enjoyment out of customers calling on me at times because they knew me and my capabilities and personal attention to their needs. Cons: half hour lunches when often working 10 hour shifts"
Branch Manager says"I have been working at Eastern Bank for more than 10 years Cons: Horrendous outdated technology-feedback surveys reflect this, but bank chooses a "band aid" approach because they are too cheap to invest in systems that actually work. Everyday we get emails from technology telling us everything that isn't working, it's absolutely embarrassing! What's more frustrating is that senior management is clueless as to how difficult this makes it for front line colleagues to do their jobs and take care of customers. Bank is exceedingly inefficient with too much paper and processes that are cumbersome and unnecessary. Sales pressure is also becoming more micromanaged and unethical with pressure put on colleagues to "cross sell" additional products, much like Wells Fargo- this is going to come back and bite Eastern Bank big time. HR dept is useless, and ignores poor morale and unethical behavior. CEO comes across more of a smooth talking politician telling employees what they want to hear."

The culture here reeks of finger pointing and covering one's back. To much backstabbing by management / coworkers (and I use that term loosely) and they play favorites. Its not what you know , its who you know. The HR department is a joke. They cant even produce a proper exit interview. Finally out of here with a great company who values employees and isn't stuck in the clicky high school mentality!"

They preach equal pay but if you’re not black or Hispanic, forget it. You won’t get hire or won’t be paid at a good rate even if you have experience. HR favor colors over quality. Have to be a brown nose in order to make it anywhere in the company. Younger millennial or newcomers are just scapegoat. They’ll get every work thrown at them and are expected to be done with minimal training. Nobody wants to work so they’ll take advantage of whoever they can. The bank’s logic is spend extravagantly for the 200th anniversary party but lowball every employee’s merit increase. Confusing advance pay for full time employees who are paid biweekly. HR is a mess. Can’t get in touch with anyone. Poor communication if you’re leaving or switching payroll."

Be prepared as the new employee to consistently be the scapegoat of every situation. Managers are basically taught to throw anyone under the bus to distract any attention brought on to their inadequacy. They claim to have an open door policy yet attempting means that managers and even the regional will target you. There is never any coaching or developmental goals set, basically it’s a self-motivated, self-benefit mentality and you are on your own and learn under pressure and lack of any support. The only way to ever succeed is to brown nose and if your liked you will advance and if not good luck."
